From my great grandma in 1950 to me. Now I share with you.

Oh, sweetheart, don’t you worry—I’ve been working with natural butters for years, and I know that frustrating feeling when you open up your lovely shea, mango, or cocoa butter and find it’s turned gritty. But don’t you dare throw it away! I’m here to share my tried-and-true method to bring that butter back to its smooth and creamy glory—just like it’s supposed to be.

So put the kettle on, settle in, and let me guide you through this simple fix, step by step. It’s as easy as baking a good old-fashioned cake, I promise!

Why Do Butters Get Gritty?

Now, darling, before we dive into fixing things, let’s talk about why this happens. Natural butters are temperature-sensitive, which means they’re always looking for a cozy spot. When they melt and cool too slowly—like during shipping in warm weather or if they sit in a room with temperature swings—their fatty acids separate and clump together into little crystals. That’s what gives them that grainy, sandy feel.

It’s not that anything’s wrong with the butter, no, no! It’s just nature doing its thing. But if we want our body butters and balms to feel as luxurious as they should, we’ve got to help them along.

What You’ll Need:

  • A microwave-safe measuring cup (like a Pyrex with a handle)
  • A rubber spatula or heat-safe spoon. In my days we used wooden spoons made by our wonderful men folk.
  •  A double boiler if you prefer the old-fashioned way! Or Microwave
  • Your gritty butter (Shea, Mango, Cocoa—whichever needs fixing)
  • A fridge or freezer, ( In 1950 we had an ice block type Fridge)
  • A storage container (the original one works fine, or another clean container)
  • Optional: An ice cream scoop (makes scooping easier!)

Step 1: Scoop It Out

Take that gritty butter and scoop it into your microwave-safe container. If it’s too firm, use an ice cream scoop or a sturdy spoon to help. We want to melt it down completely so we can reset its texture.

Step 2: Melt It Gently

Pop your container in the microwave and heat it in 30-second bursts, stirring in between. Keep going until the butter melts completely and turns clear—don’t stop at the cloudy stage! If you overheat it, though, it could ruin the butter, so be gentle with it.

(If you don’t like microwaves, you can use what our ancestors used-a double boiler—just place your container in a pot with a bit of water and heat it slowly.)

Step 3: Let It Rest

Once fully melted, let the butter sit for 5 minutes in the container. This cools it slightly before we pour it back. If you have a thermometer, make sure it’s below 135°F (57°C)—too hot, and it might damage your container!

Step 4: Quick Cool It!

Pour the melted butter back into its storage container and leave the lid off—we don’t want condensation sneaking in! Pop it in the fridge or freezer for 1–2 hours to solidify quickly. This step is the magic trick that prevents those grainy crystals from forming again.

After it’s firm, take it out, pop the lid on, and you’re all set! Smooth, creamy butter, just like it should be.

Bonus Tips from Grandma:

  • For Soapmakers: If you're making soap, don’t worry about grainy butter—it won’t affect the final product!
  • For Easy Cleanup: Wipe down your tools with paper towels before washing to avoid clogging the drain.
  • Storage Smarts: Keep your butters in a cool, stable place to prevent future graininess.

There you have it, dear heart! With just a little bit of love and patience, you can rescue any grainy butter and keep your skincare creations feeling luxurious. Happy crafting, and remember—nature gives us beautiful ingredients, we just have to treat them right. 💕
