Mascara Removal/Cleansing & Face Cleansing Is An Art
Want Younger-Looking Eyes? It Starts With How You Remove Your Mascara
The Mascara Removal Technique Beauty Experts Swear By — and Why It Changes Everything
Step-by-step mascara removal technique with a finger
rolling and tissue wrap.
Most people don’t realise eyelash mites (Demodex) live
naturally at the base of the lashes. They’re tiny, harmless in small numbers,
but can multiply if mascara is not removed properly. Good mascara hygiene is
essential to keep them under control.
Karoleen Keys Organic Skincare supports healthy lashes and
helps keep Demodex levels balanced — but only when our skincare products are used
correctly and consistently. This is how I teach my Beauty School Students and
my clients to clean their skin and remove mascara. I believe that mascara
should be carefully removed first before cleansing your face, to keep those
nasty black particles from getting into your pores.
This keeps the delicate eye area protected while removing
mascara cleanly. Use gentle pressure and slow, controlled movements. Eye mites
cannot be seen but they are there.
Preparation
- Wash
hands: Clean and dry your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring
bacteria or debris.

Add a drop of oil:- To the palm and drop of oil cleanser. Dip your index finger in the oil.
- Use
a small amount of cleansing oil on your index fingertip.
- Rolling from under the lashes
- Close
the eye:
- Keep
the eye fully closed
- Position
the finger under the lashes:
- Place
the top side of your index finger under the lash line so the lashes sit
above your finger.
- Roll
upward to localize mascara:
- Use
a gentle tapping-and-rolling motion upward.
- Lift
both top and bottom lashes in one pass to gather the mascara onto the
finger rather than the skin.
Tissue wrap and clean removal
- Wrap
the fingertip with tissue:
- Fold
a soft tissue around the same index finger (snug, not bulky).
- The
tissue should cover the pad of your finger with a smooth surface.
- Wipe
from the outer edge inward:
- Starting
at the outer corner, place the tissue-wrapped finger under the lashes.
- Roll/wipe
upward in a single, clean motion toward the center, then repeat toward
the inner corner.
- The
tissue should visibly pick up black mascara and any excess oil.
Repeat as needed:
- Use
fresh sections of tissue and light reapplication of oil if necessary.
- Avoid
dragging or pressing into the eyelid skin.
Finishing
- Final
sweep:
- Use
a clean tissue to lightly blot along the lash tips and outer corner to
remove remaining residue.
- Optional
rinse:
- Now gently press the eyes with a warm wet facecloth
- Pat dry.
Pro tips
- Minimal
oil: A tiny amount is enough; excess increases smearing.
- Pressure
control: Keep it feather-light; you’re lifting mascara off the lashes,
not scrubbing the skin.
- Direction
matters: Always start under the lashes and roll upward to prevent
transfer onto the eye area.
- Fresh
tissue surfaces: Rotate to a clean patch each pass so you’re removing,
not re-depositing.
·
Lighting and mirror: Good light and a
stable mirror help maintain gentle, precise movements. This can help in the beginning
of this treatment procedure by doing one eye at a time so the other eye is
open. Eventually, you will learn the power of touch and be able to do this
without a mirror. I hope this has helped
you, girly girls.

Cleansing Routine
Step 1: Apply Cleanser
- Gently
massage your organic cleanser into the skin using upward circular motions.
Just a few drops of an oil cleanser is required. A little goes a long way.
- Focus
on areas with makeup, sunscreen, or excess oil.
- Rub cleanser
into each side of the nose with your fingers
- Rub
eyebrows with your fingers
- I encourage
my students and clients to remove eyelash mascara first. See my separate
notes on removing the mascara.
Step 1: Prepare the Cloth
- Use
a soft, clean face cloth.
- Soak
it in warm water — not hot — to help open pores and soften the skin.
- Wring
out to remove most of the warm water
Step 3: Position the Cloth
- Fold
the warm, damp cloth and place it over your entire face.
- Close
your eyes and relax.
- Curve
both hands over the cloth, with fingers resting in the hairline and the
fattest part of your wrists gently cradling the upper cheekbone area.
- This
positioning allows the warmth to reach the eye area and forehead without
pressure.
Step 4: Hold and Breathe
- Hold
the cloth in place for 10–15 seconds.
- Breathe
deeply and let the warmth soften the skin and loosen impurities.
Step 5: Wipe Away
Rinse the face cloth in warm water again and
wring most of the water out.
- Gently
wipe the cleanser off using the cloth, starting from the centre of the
face and moving outward.
- Use
clean sections of the cloth for each area to avoid re-depositing residue.
Step 6: Repeat if Needed
- If
wearing heavy makeup or sunscreen, repeat the cloth soak and wipe once
more.
Step 7: Finish with Care
- Splash
your face with cold water to close your pores and soothe the vagus nerves.
- Pat
your skin dry with a clean towel.
- Follow
with toner, serum, and moisturizer as desired.
🌿 The Science Behind “Like
Attracts Like”
Oil dissolves oil. That’s the principle at play here. Your
skin naturally produces sebum — its own oil — which can mix with dead skin
cells, pollution, and makeup, leading
to clogged pores. A well-formulated oil cleanser binds to these impurities and
lifts them away without stripping your skin’s protective barrier.
💧 Why Cold-Pressed Oils
Matter
Cold-pressed oils retain their full spectrum of nutrients —
antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins — because they’re extracted
without heat. This makes them:
Gentle and nourishing
Non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores when chosen correctly)
Supportive of skin’s natural repair processes
🌸 What Happens When You
Remove It Correctly
The magic is in the removal. After massaging the oil
cleanser into your skin:
Use a lukewarm, damp
face cloth to gently wipe it away.
This step lifts away the oil along with impurities, leaving
your skin soft, clean, and balanced.
·
No greasy residue.
·
No tightness.
·
Just calm, regulated skin.
🌞 Oily Skin Benefits Too
When oily skin is stripped with harsh cleansers, it often
overcompensates by producing more oil. But when you cleanse with oils:
·
You respect
your skin’s natural balance
·
You reduce
excess oil production over time
·
You support
a smoother, clearer complexion
